Mention Tahoe House, and locals will say, “Oh, that place has been around forever,” recalling when this family owned and operated business used to serve dinners. A popular spot with locals and visitors alike, Tahoe House Bakery & Gourmet is located a mere 3 minutes (0.9 miles) from the Tahoe City “Y,” offering a fantastic array of food, pastries and baked goods, gourmet items, assorted teas, and “the best coffee on the lake.” With a full-service bakery, coffee shop and deli, the two-generation family proprietors also serve lunch, soups, sandwiches, and freshly prepared deli salads that belie the imagination in their delicately matched ingredients and flavors (pasta, potato, chicken, coleslaw, bean, rice, and tuna, to name but a few). If you’re on the run, all items are available to go.

The European-style bakery boasts a full-service bread menu, including Squaw Bread, croissants, assorted other pastries and sweet breakfast treats, bagels, cookies, granola, and more. Featuring serious craftsmanship, a complete line of cakes and tortes is also available. The chocolate torte with raspberry sauce is out of this world, and the carrot cake will have you hooked instantly. Call ahead, and Caroline or Barbara will be happy to show you their wedding cake book, which is pure elegance.

The gourmet store (and online counterpart) features their own line of bottled chutneys, mustards, jams and signature homemade sauces and marinades, cookie mixes and cookbooks, as well as “gourmet to go” soups and dinner fare, and the famous Tahoe House Blend Coffee (locally roasted and organic!). Around the holidays, order pre-made lasagnas, organic uncooked turkeys, pumpkin and apples pies, holiday cookies, and more.

In the coffee house seating area, the hearth style décor (featuring a great big fireplace and woodstove), and two separate sitting rooms, complete with couches, tables and chairs, make this one of the best locations on the lake for settling in to get some work done with a delicious, fresh brewed-to-order cup of Tahoe House coffee! In the summer months, there is seating available outside. Open 6-4, Sunday-Thursday; 6-6 on Friday and Saturday.
