The Red Hut Café, or more simply the Red Hut, is a longtime Tahoe staple dining experience. Originally located about halfway between the casinos and the Y on Hwy 50, the Red Hut has since added a few locations—one down in Reno and the other (my favorite) on the corner of Hwy. 50 and Ski Run Blvd. When you want the classic American diner experience in Tahoe South—look no further than the Red Hut. Truly a local’s favorite, this establishment has been run and operated by the Gardner family since its’ most recent conception in 1984.

For thirty years The Gardner’s have been frying bacon and pouring coffee for Tahoe’s hungry. The Red Hut is the type of diner/coffee shop that you usually only see in the movies. Sitting at the counter, it’s very common to have the friendly staff address you and other customers by name, often anticipating what you’d like to eat because she’s taken the time to know you as a person—not just a customer.

Speaking of the food--it’s delicious! While their omelets are amazing and the waffles first rate, I continually return to the Red Hut for one thing, and one thing only—The Usual. Conceived and priced for the working Tahoe local, this breakfast entrée consists of two eggs, a biscuit with gravy, and perfectly cooked hash browns; in fact, these hash browns are the best I’ve ever tasted. Anywhere, ever…

If you like being family, eating delicious food, and having an experience that is authentically part of the Tahoe, look no further than the Red Hut. My suggestion—go to the Ski Run location and hunker down at the counter. Ask for Terry and tell her that Sam recommended the Mexican omelet-she’ll know what you mean…
