The Naked Fish
Easily my favorite sushi joint on the South Shore, The Naked Fish has built itself a loyal following amongst Tahoe locals. After just one visit—it’s easy to understand why—the fish is of the highest quality, and if you time your visit just right, you might end up at Naked Fish during the oft-fabled happy hour. Located at 3940 Hwy 50 #3, this establishment rides the cusp of elegance and casual fare, so no matter what the occasion, The Naked Fish can set the right atmosphere.
In order to understand what sets this sushi restaurant apart, we obviously have to talk about fish. Every restaurant that serves sushi will brag about how they get their product, what shipping service they use, etc…While it’s true that most sushi bars utilize overnight delivery services, Naked Fish declines to outsource the handling of their meats because they believe it will lessen the quality of their product, and thereby lessen the tastiness of the food on your plate. Instead, the good people at Naked Fish run their own shipping operations throughout California—meaning that only the freshest seafood is purchased from purveyors both domestically and internationally.
As I live just up the street, I love going to The Naked Fish for their daily happy hours (5-6pm/9-10pm). Edamame/miso for $2, rolls for $4, and apps for $6 means that you can eat an enormous meal and not necessarily break the bank doing it. Also of note, during happy hour the cocktails are on discount and the draft beers are two for one!! Also, the main menu has many specialty rolls that you’ll find nowhere else—my favorite is the Maui Wowie containing Tempura Softshell Crab, Avocado, Topped with Tuna, Shredded Crab, Unagi and Tiger Sauce.
Couple your dinner with a bottle of Saki, and you’re in for a very stimulating dining experience…
